A Liberal Seamus

9th September, 2009. 5:56 pm. Obama's Health Care Speech

I don't know where Obama's balls have been for the past few months, but I think he found them.

I sent the following letter to President Obama, Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, and a modified version to Republican Congressman Jerry Lewis. I am making it public because I believe it's important and I hope to encourage more people to make their voices heard.
To whom it may concern,

I read today that the Obama administration and the rest of the Democratic party have stated that they are ready to abandon the government run health care option from the health care reform bill. Please tell me this is not true. If there is no public option, what is the point of health care reform at all?

I cannot currently afford health care, and even if I could, I couldn't get it anyway, because my wife and I have preexisting conditions. I know this for a fact because I tried, back when I could afford it. My only hope for health insurance is to get it through a job, which I cannot find in this economy (I had little trouble finding a job in better economic times). But even then, I have no guarantee that my insurance carrier won't drop me as soon as they decide I'm no longer profitable for them. My mother, a cancer survivor, is scared to death that this could happen to her.

Personally, I'm scared that one unforeseen injury or illness could land me in debt for the rest of my life. I know people to whom this has happened.

Although I am a registered Democrat and generally agree with the principles of the party, I am ashamed to be a member of a party that is so easily intimidated and manipulated into abandoning its principles and the people it's supposed to be working for. Can someone tell me why it is that even though Democrats control the White House and the congress, with a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, a minority of far right extremists are still running the show?

I beg Mr. Obama and the rest of the Democrats not allow the health care reform bill to be gutted to the point of uselessness by far right intimidation tactics, as they seem to be doing. For once, please put the well being of your constituents before your own fears, and realize that regardless of how loudly the opponents of health care reform shout, they are but a small minority.

We need public health care. Don't let us down.

An American in need of health care,

John Erickson

Iowa Court Says Gay Marriage Ban Is Unconstitutional
Monica Davet and Liz Robbins, NY Times, April 3, 2009
DES MOINES — Iowa became the first state in the Midwest to approve same-sex marriage on Friday, after the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously decided that a 1998 law limiting marriage to a man and a woman was unconstitutional.

[...]

“The Iowa statute limiting civil marriage to a union between a man and a woman violates the equal protection clause of the Iowa Constitution,” the justices said in a summary of their decision.

And later in the ruling, they said: “Equal protection under the Iowa Constitution is essentially a direction that all persons similarly situated should be treated alike. Since territorial times, Iowa has given meaning to this constitutional provision, striking blows to slavery and segregation, and recognizing women’s rights. The court found the issue of same-sex marriage comes to it with the same importance as the landmark cases of the past.”

I have a message for all those people, right wing and left, trying to politicize The Dark Knight as an endorsement of their political position or an indictment of their political opponents:

I'm losing a lot of respect for Bill Clinton, the way he's abusing his status as an ex-president by acting as Hillary's attack dog and repeatedly twisting Obama's words. It's the kind of dirty, dishonest tactics I would expect from the neocons.

It's common knowledge to anyone with a pinch of common sense that the War on Christmas™ isn't being waged on Christians, but by them (the crazy right wing ones, anyway).

Every year around this time, they complain up and down about godless liberals getting upset by the phrase "Merry Christmas," and insisting the everyone replace it with "Happy Holidays." But the truth is just the opposite. Liberals don't care one way or another. It's the War on Christmas Christians who get angry when someone greets them with anything other than their specific preferred phrase.

Case in point...

Muslim helps Jews attacked on New York subway
Nkechi Nneji, CNN, December 12, 2007
NEW YORK (CNN) -- A Muslim man jumped to the aid of three Jewish subway riders after they were attacked by a group of young people who objected to one of the Jews saying "Happy Hanukkah," a spokeswoman for the three said Wednesday.

Friday's altercation on the Q train began when somebody yelled out "Merry Christmas," to which rider Walter Adler responded, "Happy Hanukkah," said Toba Hellerstein.

"Almost immediately, you see the look in this guy's face like I've called his mother something," Adler told CNN affiliate WABC.

Two women who were with a group of 10 rowdy people then began to verbally assault Adler's companions with anti-Semitic language, Hellerstein said.

One member of the group allegedly yelled, "Oh, Hanukkah. That's the day that the Jews killed Jesus," she said.

When Adler tried to intercede, a male member of the group punched him, she said.

Another passenger, Hassan Askari -- a Muslim student from Bangladesh -- came to Adler's aid, and the group began physically and verbally assaulting him, Hellerstein said.

CFAW book review...

Conservatives Without Conscience
John W. Dean

I was looking forward to reading this book, as it sounded fascinating, but to be honest, I was a little disappointed. The book is basically organized into three sections: The first explains the psychological phenomenon of authoritarianism, the second compares traditional conservatism to authoritarian conservatism, and the third gives examples of authoritarianism in action in the modern republican party. I thought the third section was focused, organized and well written, but not much in there is going to be news to anyone reasonably well informed about politics. The second section was disjointed and repetitive, but necessarily so, because it's inherently difficult to define traditional conservatism. The first section was the most disappointing. I was hoping for a much more in-depth exploration of the phenomenon of authoritarianism and the studies that led to its identification and explanation. In this respect, Conservatives Without Conscience falls woefully short, as it provides only the most cursory introduction to the subject. It lists, for example, personality traits associated with authoritarian personalities (lack of empathy, amoral, racist, sexist, religious, etc.), but no explanation of how these associations were determined or why these personality traits go hand in hand with a general submission to authority.
